About the studio

Singing for musical theatre for teens and adults

If you've been told to 'sing it more classically',  but what you actually want is to belt a Hamilton number or nail a pop audition, you're in the right place.

Spotlight Vocal Lab is a private voice studio in Pleasantville, NY, specializing in musical theatre and contemporary commercial music. Lessons are one-on-one, built around your voice and your goals, and grounded in one core belief: the music you love is the best tool for learning to sing.

Who Are These Lessons For?

If you see yourself in any of these, you’re in the right place!

  • You're a musical theatre performer, or you want to be. You're preparing for auditions, a school show, or a youth production and you want to feel genuinely ready, not just rehearsed.

  • You've been trained classically and it's not quite clicking. You want to learn how to belt, mix, and sing in a way that actually sounds like musical theatre or pop, not an opera recital.

  • You've always wanted to sing but you haven't started yet. You're not sure if you're 'good enough.' (Spoiler: you don't need to be. That's what lessons are for.)

  • You're a teen or adult who wants to work on music you actually love, not repertoire that was assigned to you.

How lessons actually work

Every lesson starts with where you are, not where a method book says you

We work on the music you're actually preparing: a song from your audition list, something you heard and couldn't stop thinking about, a piece that feels just out of reach. That's not the easy route, it's the most effective one. Real technique gets built through real music, and you learn faster when you care about what you're working on.

In a typical lesson, we might work on your breath support using a verse from your audition cut, use a chorus to explore where your chest voice and head voice connect, or find out what happens to your sound when you stop trying so hard and just sing.

The goal of every lesson: you know exactly what to practice, and you're already looking forward to next week.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Not at all. Beginners are welcome, and honestly, sometimes easier to work with, because there are no old habits to unlearn. Lessons are always tailored to where you are right now.

  • Mostly musical theatre and pop, the styles you actually want to sing. I work in contemporary commercial music, which covers everything from belting a Broadway number to singing in a contemporary pop style. We'll work on repertoire you care about, and use it to build real, transferable technique.

  • Absolutely. Many of my students start with no formal training at all. The trial lesson is a great way to meet and see if it's a good fit, no commitment required.

  • A computer or tablet, Zoom, a stable internet connection, and a quiet space to sing. A decent microphone helps but isn't required to get started.

  • Once you book a trial lesson and we decide to move forward, I'll send you a scheduling link to choose a recurring time. Lessons are available in-person in Pleasantville or over Zoom.

  • I ask for at least 48 hours notice for cancellations or reschedules. Life happens. If something comes up, just let me know and we'll find another time.
